Get your infrastructure freak on.

The  Cycling Aspects of Austroads Guides is now available for free download.

This is an essential resource for people lobbying for cycling infrastructure in their local community. The publication provides an overview of the design, construction and maintenance of bicycle infrastructure and provides references to Austroad’s Guidelines for more indepth information.

1.2 Safe System Approach

In Australia, a Safe System approach to road safety has been adopted which recognises that humans, as road users are fallible and will continue to make mistakes, and that the community should not penalise people with death or serious injury when they do make mistakes. In a Safe System, therefore, roads (and vehicles) should be designed to reduce the incidence and severity of crashes when they occur. The Safe System approach requires, in part (Australian  Transport Council 2006):
  • designing, constructing and maintaining a road system (roads, vehicles and operating requirements) so that forces on the human body generated in crashes are generally less than those resulting in fatal or debilitating injury.
  • improving roads and roadsides to reduce the risk of crashes and minimise harm: measures for higher-speed roads including dividing traffic, designing ‘forgiving’ roadsides, and providing clear driver guidance. In areas with large numbers of vulnerable road users or substantial collision risk, speed management supplemented by road and roadside treatments is a key strategy for limiting crashes.
  • managing speeds, taking into account the risks on different parts of the road system.
In New Zealand, practical steps have been taken to give effect to similar guiding principles through a Safety Management Systems (SMS) approach.

Road designers should be aware of and through the design process actively support the philosophy and road safety objectives covered in the Guide to Road Safety (Austroads 2006 – 2009). The philosophy and objectives are as relevant to pedestrian and cyclists paths as they  are to roads in general.

Support the Cooks River to Iron Cove GreenWay

To GreenWay Friends and Supporters
Despite the government’s ongoing refusal to build the GreenWay, it seems the passion and support we’re receiving is going from strength to strength. People swarmed to our Marrickville Festival stand on Sunday, October 21, with people signing 270 forms letters to the Transport Minister and another 48 people writing their own letters to the Premier.

Now the government is beginning consultation on the detailed urban design elements of the light rail extension. This is a major opportunity to push the GreenWay message. Consultation commenced today and will run for just 10 days.

Although the Transport for NSW is not building the GreenWay trail, it's hoped that access to stops and a re-built bridge over Parramatta Road will benefit GreenWay users. The biodiversity component of the project is also still going ahead. Transport for NSW has said that the works on the light rail will not prevent a future GreenWay being built.

However, we understand from our local council contacts there are some key issues for concern that specifically relate to the GreenWay, including:
  • Lack of a ramp connection up and down to the new Parramatta Road pedestrian-cycle bridge. At the very least there should be a gutter to push a bike up the steps provided. Ramping would also provide wheelchair and pram access if/when the lift was out of order or in case of fire.
  • No bicycle lockers are provided at any stops.
  • The need to use local plants in new plantings around stops.
  • The incorrect naming of Taverners Hill stop. (The stop is at Battle Bridge some distance from Taverners Hill).
  • The need for signage and art and installations at the stop.
There may well be other issues because there is very little information available at this time.

The consultation session times are below:

10am - 12.30pm Saturday 27 October at Hawthorne Canal Reserve
6pm - 9pm Tuesday 30 October at Leichhardt Town Hall
10am - 12.30pm Saturday 3 November at Jack Shanahan Park
5pm - 8pm Monday 5 November at Michael Maher Room, Haberfield Centre
5pm - 8pm Wednesday 7 November at Herb Greedy Hall, Marrickville

Unfortunately, at this time, Transport for NSW has not posted any information about the detailed design options on its website but has released some artist’s impressions to the media – we’ll advise if information is posted on the web.

Thanks everyone for your ongoing support and help.

ARTcycle eNews

Greetings all ARTcycle cognoscenti,

ARTcycle eNews for October November.

As I write the Surry Hills Festival ( is springing into life.

The Sydney Bicycle Film Festival ( currently screening.

And Sydney Rides Festival ( is drawing to a close...

But not before ARTcycle has its yell. Tomorrow morning, Sunday 28 October, bright and early, the CultureCycle tour commences, lead by Angelina Russo. Meet 8:30am Deus 344 Bourke St, Surry Hills. Booking essential - if you haven't already sign up on the ARTcycle MeetUp website ( The event is free, brought to you through the generosity of Sydney Rides Festival, Sydney Cycleways and the City of Sydney.

ARTcycle is always looking at ways to provide fun filled and info packed events. Chris, bless him, has booked the Arcade Screen Printing Workshop ( for Sunday, 18 November. There is a fee as you would expect with a professionally run course in a working screen printing business. And to keep you fuelled a veg BBQ lunch. You will finish the day with a screen printed T of your own design. Places are limited but we need at least ten bods to make it happen. Sign up on the ARTcycle MeetUp website ( All fee paying events in 2012/2013 are eligible for complimentary membership of ARTcycle for this financial year.

Membership - a reminder for all those members that membership is due. Club rules state you are still a member until you are kicked out or resign. Don't have that niggling $20 on your conscience. We could use it to create more fun events. If you haven't already renewed this financial year's subscription then you can do so online - shoot us an email and we will send you ARTcycle's BSB details for a direct deposit. Cheque cash also ok. Ask for Craig as he is the go-to for membership subscriptions. Chris is the one writing the receipts.

Stay 'tuned' and see you on the street.

CultureCycle Rides Again!

Sydney Rides Festival - 28th October - come join us!

Thanks to the kind support of the Sydney Rides Festival and ARTCycle, we are offering a free CultureCycle tour and crochet workshop on Sunday 28th October in Sydney.

We'll be meeting at 8.30am at Deus at 344 Bourke Street,Surry Hills. This is a great coffee shop and bicycle repair shop. We'll have some coffee and muffins and then begin our cycle along the Bourke Street cycle way and to our first stop at the Carriage Works at 245 Wilson Street Everleigh.

After a quick bit of history, we'll cyle over to the Sheffer Gallery 38 Landers Street Darlington where we will be seeing a fantastic new exhibition by our intrepid host, Gilbert Grace. This exhibition, LUMINOUS, will be opened especially for us to visit.

From here we cycle through to the White Rabbit Contemporary Chinese Art Collection at 30 Balfour Street Chippendale. The White Rabbit Collection is one of the world’s largest and most significant collections of contemporary Chinese art. Founded by Kerr and Judith Neilson, it focuses on works produced after 2000.

From here we take a leisurely cycle through to Pyrmont, looking at the views and the excellent public artworks along the boardwalk. We'll be stopping to have lunch along the way. Pyrmont has a number of nice cafes and restaurants but some are quite expensive so you might like to bring a sandwich along and enjoy a coffee and cake somewhere local.

From Pyrmont we cycle over to the National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour where we will view some of their exhibitions and hopefully see the products of the Phoenix kites workshop run by professional kite-maker Michael Richards.

We'll then rest for a bit and do a one hour crochet workshop. I'll bring all the materials and hooks along so that you can focus on relaxing and learning or re-learning a great technique. I'll also bring along some new reflective cycle clothing that I've been developing for Xmas. I'd love your feedback on it!

We start at 8.30am and finish at 3.30pm.

The tour and workshop are free and you can register here and you can read more about ARTcycle here!

Please be aware that bikes are not provided and you must wear a helmet.

Please contact me on if you have any questions.

We look forward to meeting you!

GreenWay Hub Day

The GreenWay Hub Day proved a success. In high winter fifteen riders braved a chilly morning that became a beautiful sunny winters day to test the GreenWay Food and Art Trail. Part of the trail anyway, there will be a trial of the full trail in coming months.

Gilbert lead riders to various galleries while including the GreenWay between the bicycle bridge and Lords Rd tunnel. We visited Art Est, thanks Nicole and Sandra for the impromptu sustainable printing workshop. From there to Boomalli where Graham Toomey welcomed us to the revitalised Boomalli Coop Gallery. Then to Articulate where Tracey Clement gave us the skinny on her consumption of plasticware.

Craig looked after the Fedner Blender on its second only outing. Looking forward to a busy summer and by then we should have it all tweeked.

The GreenWay Sustainability Committee would like anyone who attended yesterday's events to provide feedback via the form - GreenWay Hub Day Feedback These can be filled in and sent to us at or sent direct to the GreenWay at

Thanks to everyone who came and look forward to next MeetUp.

Bike-it Noumea

Hi cycling friends,
Looking for a mid winter exotic and new cycling touring destination? Then come and join me and 4 others in a small MTB/road touring group heading to New Caledonia July 19th 2012 for some riding adventures.

Plan is for a 12 day tour along tropical coasts, over the island's mountain ranges and return to Noumea. Will be riding up to about 60km per day for 6 of the 12 days and two of the days are hilly riding so a reasonable level of riding fitness needed. But we won't need to be loaded to the hilt with gear as mostly staying at gites and homestay along the way so no need to carry tents and food for an army. The tour will include the West and East coasts, a surf camp, kayaking, Kanak culture, and exploring a new route across the ranges in the northern part of the island. Will share costs for a van & trailer transits, van and trailer backup, and get better deals on accommodation and fares etc. See more on New Caledonia at

If you are interested and want to hear more then let me know ASAP as about to start making bookings - email at or call . Please pass on to others who you think may be interested!

GreenWay Debate in Parliament - all welcome

Families invited to debate 31 May 2012

The Friends of the GreenWay group today urged the inner west community, especially families with school-aged children, along to the May 31 NSW Parliament GreenWay debate.

The 4.30pm debate kick-off time means that parents would be able to bring their children after school (most schools finish around 3pm). However, as the debate will last no longer than 16 minutes, attendees are strongly urged to arrive by at least 4.15pm.

The GreenWay will be a major off-road route for local kids to get to school and a place where they can get fit while safely exploring the fascinating local environment.

Artists Take Note - Register or lose title.

Register or regret: artists alerted to new ownership law

A new consignment regime seems to have taken many by surprise.

Artists risk losing work they have consigned to commercial galleries if the galleries go bust, thanks to a new federal government law that few in the art world know about.

The Personal Properties Securities Act, which came into effect on January 30, requires artists to lodge ownership of their consigned work with an electronic register that can be searched by potential buyers. Artists previously relied on consignment notes to prove they owned their work.

Artists should be prepared to either comply with the new law or risk losing any security interest over their work when they give it to galleries for sale or exhibition, says the Arts Law Centre of Australia...

ARTcycle Art Month testimonial

What one happy rider said about the Art Month Inner West Trail cycling tour:
Thank you Gilbert for a great ride on Saturday (Inner West Ride). I enjoyed the talks from the artists and curators which really added to our visits. Afternoon tea being provided by Art Est was also a lovely treat. My Favourite exhibition was the drawing at Tin Sheds and it was great to visit new gallery spaces (and discover some good eating nooks).
I am on your next weeks ride - looking forward to it!
Cheers Nikki
